A conversation about faith, family and parenting
Roots and Wings Podcast is a 20-30 minute weekly podcast hosted by Brittany Estep and her Dad... veteran, award winning, children's singer-songwriter and family ministry guy Chip Richter. The seed for this project was hatched from a very popular parenting workshop for parents and grandparents called Roots and Wings, exploring the idea of how to pass our faith onto our children and help them make it their own. This podcast is a conversation about faith, family and parenting and all of the joys and challenges that come with that. We are especially interested in getting you our listener involved in the conversation and want to encourage you to send us your questions and comments via Email or through our Facebook and Instagram platforms. Subscribe to Roots and Wings Podcast at Apple Podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, PodBean, Google Play Music or your favorite podcast hosting site. Please be sure to share Roots and Wings Podcast with your friends and review and rate to help us get the word out!

Episode 76 - "Risky Business"
Publish Date 2-24-20
It sounds counter intuitive when you sat it but letting your kids take risks and fail is actually a really good parenting move on your part! This week's topic was inspired by Episode 71 "We Have To Try" and Josh's comment that he wanted to give their daughter Riley permission to take risks even if those risks mean she has to experience falling down, a lot. His reasoning was he knew how much she would benefit from the growth that is happening for her in those high risk moments. It's Risky Business in parenting but without risk there is no growth... the reward is in the risk. Brittany shares her experience working with College students and recognizing the difference between those whose parents gave them a chance to take risks and fail and ones with parents whose mission was to clear away every obstacle.

Episode 63 - "I Know What You're Gonna Say"
Publish Date 4-22-19
Are you saying things to your kids over and over again till they know what you're going to say before you even say it? Hopefully what they're hearing from you over and over again are words of love and encouragement rather than constantly being corrected or reprimanded. Why is it so easy for us to be quick to criticize or correct our kids? It seems like we need to be more intentional about speaking words of affirmation and encouragement. For some reason this does not come as natural to us. Wouldn't it be great if we told our kids we loved them so many times and in so many ways that they actually becomes second nature to us and our kids would just expect it?

So we are kicking off Part One of "The Dad Episodes" with Chip and special guest co-host Josh who will fill you in on what the Dad Episodes are all about. Oh and we think our female listeners will appreciate these episodes as well :-)
Episode 61 - ENCORE "My Dad's Coat"
Publish Date 4-8-19
It's the beginning of touring season for Chip and we are working on producing some great interviews to air this spring and summer. So we're bringing you a Special ENCORE Episode this week an episode that was a favorite of our listeners when it first aired in March of last year. We're talking about the idea of helping kids to make the faith traditions they may be inheriting from us their very own. The truth is this faith of ours and the heritage of faith we may have received from our parents and grandparents probably looks a lot different than it did for them. It makes sense then that our children's and grandchildren's faith will also look a bit different than ours. This episode also features a song called My Dad's Coat that Chip wrote and features his friend Phil Keaggy on electric guitar and vocals.

Episode 58 - "Perfect Parents and Perfect Kids"
Publish Date 3-18-19
There's no such thing as "Perfect Parenting" or "Perfect Children" it's just not a reality. So why then do we spend so much of our lives either striving for perfection or demanding perfection in others when the truth is we are all imperfect people? So many of us walk around with deep wounds and so much baggage feeling like we are failing at life because we are not measuring up to this ideal Mom, Dad, Partner, Son, Daughter, or Friend we might be measuring ourselves with. We need to somehow get our minds around the fact that this idea of perfection is not reality. There are no perfect people, no perfect parents, no perfect kids, and no perfect families. So maybe that's the bad news, but here's the good news you are enough. Did you hear that bit of "gospel"? God knows us and sees us just the way we are with all of our imperfections and flaws and still loves us with complete and everlasting love. An unconditional, transforming love that will absolutely bring wholeness and healing to our lives and to our parenting and marriage relationships.

This week we are celebrating a birthday! The Roots and Wings Podcast is one year old this week! After blowing out the candles and finishing their cake Chip and Brittany get into talking about how God might use our children to bring something new and revelatory to us. Jesus said, "Learn this well; Unless you dramatically change your way of thinking and become teachable, and learn about heaven's kingdom realm with the wide-eyed wonder of a child, you will never be able to enter in. Whoever continually humbles himself to become like this gentle child is the greatest one in heaven's kingdom realm." Matthew 18:3-4

Episode 52 - "8 Ways To Exasperate Your Kids"
Publish Date 2-4-19
I was going through some old file folders and found some notes I jotted down from a radio show discussion panel on parenting. I honestly don't remember the name of the radio show or source but I thought they were important enough to write down at the time and rediscovering them today I think they might be worth sharing with other parents out there.
Ephesians 6:4 encourages us with this thought: "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." Another translation says, "do not provoke your children to anger". Seems like a no brainer doesn't it ? And yet I know in my adventures in parenting I've been guilty of doing just that. I think that's why I must have taken the time to take these notes when I heard that radio interview.
Here's a link to read the blog post and review the "8 Ways to Exasperate Your Kids" and I hope you'll be encouraged by these thoughts in your parenting adventures.

We're thinking about how important it is for us to seek and share forgiveness for healthy, vibrant family relationships. For parents it's vital for us to model forgiveness in our homes. Chip was inspired by a recent Ted Talk he heard all about forgiveness. The ability to both offer and receive forgiveness is a powerful exercise for individuals and families. Forgiveness can be the start of the healing, restoration and freedom we need to grow up into all that God has designed for our lives and the lives of our children.

episode 32 - "rest, shabbat, sabbath, menuha"
Publish Date 9-17-18
Recently Chip was inspired by a podcast episode from Rob Bell all about "Menuha" or "Rest", "Shabbat", "Sabbath" Chip and Brittany talk about the legalism that can sometimes surround the idea of observing a "Sabbath" and how that has caused some of us to grow weary of the practice and maybe even ignore it all together. Chip shares some of the take aways from Rob Bell's podcast episode that resonated with him and inspired him to explore the rhythm of Menuha and what it means for the fulness of our lives. We hope this conversation will encourage you in finding opportunity and meaning in taking a rest from your work and discover the spiritual significance of celebrating a season of creating/building/working through rest.

episode 29 - "Back to school - a few more thoughts"
Publish Date 8-27-18
This episode comes to you direct from the shores of Lake Erie where Chip is finishing up the summer season at Lakeside Chautauqua. He still flying solo in this one and adding a few thoughts to the episode from last week all about feeling a little anxious as we send our kids off to a new school year.
Chip says, "I've been "liking" lots of pics being posted on my social media platforms from families I know whose kids are starting their "First Day of (kindergarten, 1st Grade... fill in the blank here) and reading the accompanying comments of their parents. I can't help but pick up as I read between the lines some of the anxiety in those comments... and in truth I can sure understand that... I remember sending my kids off to kindergarten, 1st grade, first day of junior high or first day of high school (YIKES)... those were anxious times for me for sure and I can relate! In the first place you can't believe they are old enough to be doing this! In the second place you're certain they are not ready for this! And finally in the third place there's nothing you can do about it... ready or not, it's happening and there's not a thing you can do to slow it down or delay the inevitable and anxiety may be running high."
This week we are sharing a few more practical parenting tips to help support your kids during the school year whatever the season they're in (Elementary, JR High, High School even College).

episode 28 - "back to school anxiety"
Publish Date 8-20-18
In this episode Chip is flying solo as Brittany is not able to join the conversation because she and Jeff are up to their eyeballs in a new transitional season of starting a new job, moving and starting work on a Masters degree. Actually a lot of what Brittny is doing has to do with the phrase Back to School!
Here in the final weeks of summer we are squeezing out the last drops of summertime while looking ahead into the transitional season of Back To School. The phrase "Back to School" may bring cries of "oh no say it isn't so" from the kids and "I thought it would never get here" from the parents! If your morning the passing of summer or doing a happy dance for back to school time most parents, and their children, will at some point experience along the way a bit of anxiety that comes with a new transitional season.
We hope this episode will be encouraging for you and inspire you to get connected with other parents who might be feeling the same emotions and anxieties and to go to the One who knows us and our kids the best and who loves us all the most, more than we can ever imagine!

episode 25 - "self esteem, confidence and body image" part 2
Publish Date 7-30-18
This episode is a part 2 of a conversation with Chip joined his daughters Brittany and Megan as they talk about a topic that can be very sensitive for some families. Nurturing a healthy self-esteem and body image is so important for our children, especially girls although boys are needing just as much encouragement and parenting in this too. We live in a culture/society overly focused on outward appearances. Children, especially tweens and teens are literally being bombarded with messages of "what you should look like"... do you remember Junior High, remember the first day of school going to 7th grade? The pressure and anxiety kids feel is very real as parents and grandparents we really need to be aware and have a strategy to help our children grow up to have a healthy (and we should put the emphasis on "Healthy") sense of confidence, self esteem and body image.
Brittany and Megan shed some light on this topic from a girls perspective and share some personal things they experienced growing up and how they maneuvered this delicate and sometimes difficult time of life. Chip offers some thoughts about how to make a strategy and a few tips.

episode 22 - "Josh and megan osborn interview" part 5
Publish Date 7-9-18
This is episode will conclude our 5 part interview with Josh and Megan Osborn as they have been telling their family story of their twin baby girls, Finley and Riley, being born at 23 weeks 6 days. The heartbreak of losing Finley only a few hours after she was born and then Riley's fight for survival. This week they continue to share about the surgeries, procedures and amazing care Riley received in her long stay in Akron Children's Hospital NICU and the day they finally bring her home and reality of the journey ahead.
The Osborns share a story that is both heartbreaking and inspiring, one that has taken them on journey of faith, hope and love. We wanted to give them plenty of time to tell their story and so that's why it's a 5 part interview.... We so appreciate their willingness to open up and give our listeners a glimpse into such a personal and difficult time. Their hope is that some part of their journey will inspire, encourage and build up others who have faced or might be facing a truly difficult family crisis.
Riley continues to amaze and inspire us and her Doctors and Therapists. Check out photos and videos as well as follow Riley's progress on the Riley Updates Facebook page. There's also been a Go Fund Me Website set up by friends of the Osborns that will help cover costs for medical procedures and equipment not covered by their insurance. (Links Below)

Since 1874, Lakeside has been Ohio’s answer to New York’s Chautauqua. Tidy 19th-century summer cottages remain the heart of this quiet beach town. In this episode Chip and Brittany reminisce about some fun summertime family times and talk about some ideas for families to have an "Intentional Summer". Making memories out of moments sometimes happens because we plan for it and sometimes because we don't. Just taking life as it comes can be good but making a plan is never a bad idea. You can always go off the path and make it up as you go but it's nice to know the path is there if you need it.
A bonus feature in this episode... a LIVE version of Chip Richter's "Ice Cream" song from his upcoming Live Concert DVD "Chip Richter LIVE from Hoover Auditorium". You can help support this project via Chip's Kickstarter Campaign ending Saturday, June 3rd, 2018 ... Make a Pledge Today!

episode 12 - "Winner winner family dinner"
Publish Date 4-30-18
Never underestimate the importance of family meal times. It’s not so much about what’s on the table as it is who’s around the table. So many good things can happen when we are able to gather together for a family meal on a regular basis. Taking time to step away from busy schedules and activities that take us all in different directions to come together to regroup, reconnect and center ourselves is so important. Sadly the practice of taking a regular family meal together is disappearing in many homes.
In this episode Chip and Brittany reminisce about good times and wonderful conversations shared around their dinner table at “Richter Ranch” and talk about some fun ideas and practical tips to help make it a tradition at your house.

episode 11 - "Introducing Children to scripture"
Publish Date 4-23-18
As Christians we know how important it is to have a regular dose of scripture coming into our lives and if we're honest we also know how hit and miss that can be at times. It's equally important to make sure our kids are exposed to scripture on a regular basis. In the same way that we make sure our children are eating right getting all the vitamins and nutrients they need to grow healthy and strong... we recognize it's just the same with their spiritual health and wellness and scripture is very much a part of that.
This episode is filled with some very practical ideas families can try at home to begin introducing scripture to children and make it part of their daily lives. Check out the links below for some of the online resources we talk about in this episode.

episode 10 - "parenting free-range kids"
Publish Date 4-16-18
This episode topic is lifted from the news as Chip and Britt talk about the recent legislation passed by Utah law makers legalizing so called Free-range parenting. Several other states are considering similar legislation but Utah is the first to make this law. The idea here is that parents who give their kids the freedom and independence to play outside, walk to school, ride their bike, etc. without constant parental supervision (aka what normal parenting was like when most of us were being raised by our parents) will not be subjected to investigation and possible prosecution by child-welfare authorities.
Critics of this law say letting kids strike out on their own can expose them to serious dangers, from criminals to cars. They agree with the legal action and investigation of parents like the Maryland couple who allowed their 10- and 6-year-old children to walk home alone from a park in 2015. But lawmakers and policy groups in Utah and several other states say the protective pendulum has swung too far, and it's time to send that message to parents who choose to raise their children in a healthy environment that grants them more freedom and independence.

episode 4 - "Calling Out the Best in Your Kids"
Publish Date 3-5-18:
This episode opens up with a very short but powerful audio clip from the The Help starring Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone © 2011 - Dreamworks/Touchstone Pictures. We use this clip as an example of what this show is all about... Speaking Life and Love and Wholeness over your children... calling out the best in them... the thing you may not see today but believing is in there. On the flip side checking ourselves as parents... to be less critical and slow to use harsh or hurtful words. Reacting to our children rather than responding is not the same thing... easy to say hard to do, we've all been there. We hope this episode of Roots and Wings Podcast will encourage and inspire you! Words are powerful and can bring both life and death. We should not underestimate the power of affirming, nurturing, love filled words that we can speak to our children... and we can not do it too soon or enough. Chip shares a bit about his personal revelation as a young father regarding this topic and Brittany's response in hearing it is surprising.
As always we welcome your comments and ideas for show topics record a vice memo on your smart phone and email it to [email protected] or [email protected] or if you want to just type your comment you can do that too. Either way we would love to hear from you and add your voice to the conversation.

Episode 3 - "Less Is More"
Publish Date 2-26-18:
As we recorded this episode the season of Lent has just begun. Chip and Brittany share some thoughts around the idea of how giving something up for a season can actually be not so much of a loss but really in the end a big gain... how "Less" can be "More" and how powerful that can be in our lives personally but also how we might see that practice can work within our families and children. Chip and Brittany share some real life stories of how one family used an opportunity of sharing the abundance of what they had with a family in need to show their children what a Compassionate and Charitable Spirit can look like in action... and the really amazing thing was the children responded to the opportunity and blew the parents away!

Episode 2 - "Sibling Love"
Publish Date 2-19-18:
We are talking about LOVE... Sibling Love to be exact. So I'm sure your kids all get along perfectly together all the time, no arguments, no fighting, no name calling, no tears.... wait ... what? ... you mean that's not happening in your household? I'm teasing of course... sibling rivalry is as old as time and common in all families. So what's a good way to minimize fighting and squabbling among your children and even more important how can you use those tense times as a parenting/teaching moment to encourage love and kindness and peace within your tribe? We touch on a couple ideas and talk about a couple great resources for you to check out. (See links below) Also as a bonus we've included Chip's song "Love, Love, Love, Love" a mash up of a couple familiar vacation Bible School songs from way back when. This tune was included on Chip's CD My Dad's Coat and features the voices of his family (Chip's kids were just wee little ones see if you can pick out Brittany :-O) doing the spoken word parts... there's a link below to download the tune or the whole CD.
